Gemini: Your New Google Docs BFF

(you can easily filter previous issues by application!)

I hate to be a backseat driver but Google Gemini finally received an update that allows us to interact with Google Docs from Google Drive directly (like how was this not a thing from the very beginning 😂).

I’m still in the middle of testing but here's a very practical use case that has been working very well for me.

Summarize lengthy meeting notes

First, copy the URL of a meeting notes document in Google Docs (I used a document with 12 pages of notes).

Then, within Google Gemini Advanced, select “Add from Drive” and paste the URL of the document in the search field.

Now you can prompt Gemini with:

  • Summarize this meeting using 5 bullet points
  • Give me the top 5 takeaways from this meeting
  • What are the action items from this meeting? List out the action and corresponding owner.
💡
Pro tip: You can add multiple Google Docs (from the same project for example) to receive a more comprehensive output!

Limitations

  • Currently we can only attach PDFs and Google Docs from Google Drive (really looking forward to integrations with Google Sheets and Slides)
  • This feature is only available to the paid version of Google Gemini
  • This feature is unavailable to business users (I'm assuming Google is still trying to figure out how to allow business users to access their Google Drive data while having security and privacy safeguards in place)
