Google I/O 2026: Gemini Spark, Omni, and 3.5 Flash

Hey friends, today's a special issue since I just got back from Google I/O 2026 in Mountain View, and I'd like to share the 3 most important announcements that matter for you, so let's just get started! 😁

1. Gemini Spark is Google's answer to Codex and Claude Cowork

This was the biggest announcement for me. Gemini Spark is a personal AI agent that's natively integrated with your Gmail, Drive, and Calendar, which means it has all your context from day one.

If you've heard of Codex or Claude Cowork, Spark is Google's version. But Spark doesn't require the kind of setup that those tools need (i.e. no need for complex setups involving configuration files and folder mapping).

That tells me it's clearly built for everyday users, not nerds power users like myself. Put simply: If you've been curious about AI agents but intimidated by the setup, Spark is probably your entry point.

One more thing: Spark runs on dedicated virtual machines, so you can close your laptop and it keeps working in the background (unlike Codex and Claude Cowork/Code)

2. Gemini Omni is where it gets interesting

On the surface, Gemini Omni is just a more powerful video model (shocking, the company that owns YouTube is investing in video). But here's my prediction: Omni is the first step toward completely reimagining how user interfaces work.

Imagine this: instead of opening a fixed app with a fixed layout, the AI generates the exact screen you need in that moment.

  • Ask about dinner, you get a map with restaurant options.
  • Ask about a meeting, you see the calendar invite with attendee details and talking points.

To be clear, this "load on demand UI/UX" concept is MY prediction so let's see how it plays out in the next few years.

3. Gemini 3.5 Flash is a frontier model at flash speed

Google launched Gemini 3.5 Flash, and it (apparently) outperforms the previous 3.1 Pro in most benchmarks while being significantly faster.

  • For context, the "Flash" tier used to be the budget option (the one you used when you didn't want to pay for the good stuff). Now it's competing with the best models out there.

To be VERY honest (and Googlers don't hate me for saying this), after playing around with 3.5 Flash I can't say it's more powerful than other frontier models like Opus and ChatGPT 5.5 (or even 3.1 Pro for that matter) but it's definitely faster πŸ˜….

On that note: Gemini 3.5 Pro is coming too later this year.

Everything else worth knowing

Quick rundown of the other Day 1 announcements:

  • Docs Live: Start talking, and Google Docs listens, understands your intent, and begins writing the outline. Then you keep iterating with your voice.
  • Ask YouTube: AI-powered search that understands nuanced prompts to find the most relevant video, with follow-up questions. I wonder how this will impact my YouTube viewership metrics lol.
  • Google Search: AI Mode upgraded to Gemini 3.5. AI-enabled autocomplete in the search box. You can now create "search agents" that keep working in the background.
  • Daily Brief: A Gemini agent that scans your Google apps, organizes relevant data, and summarizes your day with suggested next steps.
  • Android XR glasses: First audio glasses arriving this fall with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. Pairs with BOTH Android and iOS.
  • Gemini app: Now at 900 million monthly active users 🀯.

Let me know which announcement you're most excited about! 😁
