Google Calendar: Add Task from Chat, Create event from Gmail

(you can now filter previous editions by application!)

It’s been a while since I shared something around Google Calendar so I’ve got 2 tips for you today:

Add a Task directly from Google Chat

The next time someone pings you with an action item over Chat, click the three dots > Add to Tasks

The content of that message will be automatically added to your Google Task list, and you can set a due date for that task

Tasks without a specific time will appear as an “all-day” task on your Google Calendar automatically. Tasks with a specific time will appear in that corresponding time slot

With this tip, there’s no need to toggle among 3 different apps (Google Chat, Tasks, Calendar) when capturing a to-do item!

Create event directly from Gmail

I already had this tip planned but as fate would have it, I received this question from a fellow subscriber earlier this week:

Here's what to do:

Within an email thread with multiple attendees, click the 3 dots > Create Event

A new Calendar event will appear. The email subject line will be the event title, the body of the email will be added to the description field, and all recipients (excluding bcc) will be added to the invitee list

💡
Pro tip: After sending out the invite, you can copy everyone's emails to your clipboard by selecting "Copy guest emails"

⌨️ Keyboard shortcut

  • Press E in Calendar with an event selected to edit event
