Google Gemini: Stop Using the Wrong AI Model

(you can easily filter previous issues by application!)

Hey friends! In case you missed it I published my latest Google Gemini tutorial earlier this week that covers a crucial concept for all AI users: when to use Reasoning models vs. Chat models.

Different models for different use cases

When you expand the model selection dropdown in Google Gemini, you'll see this:

I've blurred the model numbers because they matter less than the descriptions. Numbers may change, but each model's purpose remains consistent.

Here's an "Explain Like I'm 5" breakdown of the different models:

Pro (best for complex tasks)

Google Gemini's Pro models function as "Reasoning models." They excel at considering factors you might have overlooked in your original prompt.

For example, if I were job hunting, I'd ask the Pro model: "Based on this job description, recommend 10 actionable changes to my resume."

The Pro model might reason:

"Jeff wants a Strategy and Operations role but has Product Marketing experience. Let's identify skills he should highlight that are applicable to his target role..."

Flash (for everyday tasks)

Google Gemini's Flash models serve as "Chat models." These are the straightforward models we've grown used to (remember ChatGPT 3.5?) that handle simple tasks where speed matters most.

For example, you might ask: "Here are 10 job descriptions. Create a table with 3 columns - Title, Salary range, and Years of experience required."

The Flash model doesn't need to "think" much - it just executes.

💡
Pro tip: The middle Flash model works as a "Hybrid model" for developers seeking balance between speed and cost. Most regular AI users can skip this option. (And yes, it's confusing that Google named both models "Flash." Like dude Google why 😅)

Models for the major players

So...which one should I use?

Don't overthink this: Default to the Reasoning model for whatever AI tool you're using. Only switch to the Chat model for simple tasks when you need quick answers.
