Google Docs: Transform Your Documents with New Cover Images

(you can easily filter previous issues by application!)

Hey friends!

Would you believe me if I told you the screenshot below is taken from Google Docs?

The New Cover Images Feature

Google Docs now lets us personalize our documents with full-bleed cover images that extend from edge to edge. This creates a more visually appealing document that stands out from the typical white-background Docs we've all come to know.

I'll be very honest: as a longtime Notion user, it’s kinda funny how Google Docs is essentially copying a feature Notion introduced about five years ago.

How to Add a Cover Image (It's Surprisingly Difficult)

You'd think adding a cover image would be straightforward, but Google has hidden this feature behind a few menus:

  1. Open a new Google Doc by typing "doc.new" in your browser
  2. Select "Format" from the menu bar → "Switch to pageless format"
  3. Select "Cover image"

Once you've found the cover image option, you'll see several sources for adding images but I recommend going with the basics (Stock Images → Category: Abstract).

Bottom Line

While Google Docs is fashionably late to the cover image party, this feature does add a welcome touch of visual appeal to our documents. Just remember you'll need to use pageless mode to take advantage of it.

Next time someone compliments your beautiful document, you can casually mention, "Oh, this old thing? It's just Google Docs with their new-to-them cover image feature."
