[Workspace] Put Files on Lockdown

Workspace editions only apply for Google Workspace users (i.e. businesses), and are sent in addition to the regular weekly Productivity Pings

(you can always filter previous issues by application!)

Put files on lockdown

The feature itself is simple enough:

  1. Hover over any file within Google Drive
  2. Right-click > File information > Lock

Wait, but what’s the point? Isn’t this exactly the same thing as sharing a file with “View-only” access?

🤷🏻 When should I use this?

I find this feature shines when you need to share edit access to an entire Project Folder, but want to restrict the ability to edit specific files.

So instead of having to:

  • Right click > Share > wait for Drive to load > change from editor to viewer

You can simply:

  • Right-click > File information > Lock

⌨️ Keyboard shortcut

  • Press "N" to quickly rename files in Google Drive
